In the old webmail, there was an option to save a contact in a text file or in the database. Importing contacts from a file resulted in those contacts being stored in a text file, adding a contact manually stores the contact in the database per default.

In the new webmail, only the contacts stored in the database are shown. This can be remedied by logging in to the old webmail and changing this option in each contact. Doing this by manually is very tedious though.

Does anyone know of an automatic solution to convert all the contacts stored in a text file of the old webmail to be stored in the database?

Thanks in advance!

Mike

The text below applies to V9 of Icewarp Mail Server & supposes that the groupware database and tables exist and that the groupware
service is running.

When the old address books already exist, these are present as "address.dat" files in the folders ".../merak/webmail/users/..."

0/ Make a copy of the Groupware database (just in case you need to revert back)

1/ First convert the contents of the text-file based address books to UTF-8:

Launch a browser and type
http://<IP Merak machine>:<port service web>/admin/tools/convert_user_data.html
The script will ask for an alias+password with "administrator" rights in order to execute.
Choose "ISO-8859-1" from the dropdown menu of charset
Leave the "Old webmail path" blank
Click on the button to execute the script

2/ Next import the contents of ALL the "address.dat" files:

Launch a browser and type
http://<IP Merak machine>:<port service web>/admin/tools/convert_old_webmail.html
The script will ask for an alias+password with "administrator" rights in order to execute.
Leave both the fields empty (Global address book and Old Webmail user directory)
Click on the button to execute the script
A summary report of all conversions carried out is presented.

Hi, Mfac

So, you guys have to run html/admin/tools/convert_old_webmail.html, I believe its mentioned in Merak Whats New 9 and in webmail pro manual. The global address book field can be blank unless you want to convert from old global address book to new method (using Merak group account).

It converts text address books (if your contacts are in text, from old webmail - look for address.dat in merak/webmail/users) to your groupware database (remember for version 9 groupware has to be running even if you dont have a license and with a DB defined - you just dont get sharing, for that you need a license).

Mfac, its normal to see duplicates, as you converted to DB and you have contacts both in text (address.dat) and DB. I suggest you backup your address.dat's. I used

xcopy *.dat c:\wmail-bkp /E /I (inside webmail/users folder) so it copies all DATs to another directory.

Then delete the address.dat's and the dupes will stop.

regards,
Marcio
