Since Outlook won't do it, is it possible to create an IMAP rule in Icewarp that when a user deletes a message in Outlook that the Icewarp server will move it to a Deleted Items folder in their profile?

We're working hard at replacing Exchange servers and only have two obstacles left that's making this difficult. Moving deleted items to a "Deleted Items" folder rather than drawing a line through them, and depositing emails sent from Outlook into the users Sent Items folder on the server.

I believe I can tackle the Sent Items issue with a rule on the mailserver, but I'm stuck on the Deleted items issue.

Hi, Denny

I answered in your feature request. Not sure if something better can be done, maybe someone knows. Here's what I can tell you...

1) About deleting msgs, you can make the slash on top of msgs disappear.

See: http://kb.its.psu.edu/psu-all/hd/how-to-delete-imap-messages-in-outlook/

But actually its still doing its thing and you have to purge...

To have a trash you can have them move msgs they want to delete to trash...

2) Sent messages AFAIK go to sent items, no? I think theres a setting in Outlook.

Im not sure the rule server side will do. As the message is received and then the rules have no way to act...

It seems however, Outlook is one of the few clients that let you use rules with IMAP. I did a search in Google for Outlook +IMAP +sent items.

Take a look at this: http://www.mcmaster.ca/ctl/outlookimapsentitems.htm

Hope it helps.

Regards,
Marcio

We use outlook rules (on the client obviously) to accomplish these two tasks in imap accounts.

When a message comes in, we put a copy automatically in the trash.  That way, when the user deletes it (and purges it) from outlook, there is already a copy in the user's trash.  We have not figure out how to both delete and purge an imap message in outlook with a single command, but at least we solved the "move to trash" problem.

We use an outlook rule to copy sent messages into the sent folder upon sending.

Hi, guys

An interesting article I found about having deleted msgs go to trash in olook: http://zoltanb.co.uk/index.php?/articles/outlook-send-to-trash-with-imap.php

On his site it states the problem and he accomplished it using macros...

If you set up outlook with an IMAP account, there's no way to tell outlook to send an email to trash on deletion.
Most email clients will happily do it, but outlook only has the default mark for deletion and purge options.
After hours and hours of struggling, I managed to do it in outlook what is normally one click in other mail clinets:

Regards

Also, about auto purge, maybe this helps

Edit > Purge > Purge Options > Purge items when switching folders while online

Also theres email sync with activesync, but would have to license each machine, not sure how it behaves.

This here should not be a client side role... If u delete a mail in a folder in outlook you are also deleting it on the server.
Therefore the server should move the message to a trash-folder.

Hi, Noit

Not sure on that... Did you contact support about it? I think this behaviour is the same in any mail server, but not 100% sure. In IMAP you tag msgs to be deleted, I think would be hard to auto move them to trash, if youre using a client. Webmail does that, though.

Thats why IMHO there are several sites on the internet as the ones I sent you with workarounds for outlook and some email clients let you store deleted items in trash. Only Outlook, as usual, doesnt seem to have an easy way.
