I have Merak Antivirus installed (9.3.2) and it catches an occasional virus - maybe 1 per day, which seems pretty low. Every night I run a McAfee (8.5) on demand scan and it catches a dozen or so viruses, almost all of them are reported as "Generic Malware.a!zip Trojan". I can check my Merak AV logs and see the exact messages passing the Merak AV check. I have sent copies of infected messages to Avast so that they can provide filters for them, but that was over a week ago and nothing has changed. For anyone who uses Merak AV, does this sound normal? Typical? Any suggestions? I have Merak AV updating (successfully) every hour, but Active Updates do not work - Icewarp support isn't sure why.

Im having similar problems for a number of months.  The trojans come through faster than the signature updates for merak AV?  Ive had a virus sitting in my mailbox all morning, been forwarding it back to myself for hours, keeps coming through.  I ran a AVG scan on the file and it picks it up straight away.  I force an AV update in merak and it tells me there is no updates, it will probably be another day or more before merak picks it up.  Whats the deal?  Is merak AV useless now?

Hi, Guys

Afaik antivirus in general are catching less viruses. Nowadays the phishing scams and such are happening more often.

If theres a virus Merak's AV is not catching, I suggest you zip it and send to support, so they can confirm this fact and contact Avast.

About Merak AV not updating, check:

- If youre licenses has upgrade days left
- rename /avast folder and reinstall Merak
- if you have proxy on port 80 outbound on your server, see this: http://esupport.icewarp.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=48

I also recommend excluding Merak path from your resident AV.

My AV is updating fine, it shows last update as November 9, last update size 28.42 MB, Last update version: 81109-0.

About auto update, what it does besides activate mechanism to auto update as soon as an update is released, is sign you up to a mailing list so you can get news about new updates. Check your SMTP logs to see if its signing up ok and talk to IW, I believe they can manually fix your address on that mailing list.

regards,
Marcio

Good Post! But I must say about http://www.search-and-destroy.com/.It also renders advanced protection against viruses, spyware without slowing down your PC. It has also interesting characteristics like FREE Downloading, isn't it?

Thanks for the response, Marcio. I've checked or tried everything you list except the proxy server suggestion. Since I don't use a proxy server, that seemed safe. Also, I had this working on one server (identical setup), but when I switched to my new server (better hardware), the update service broke. I'll recheck my SMTP logs and talk to IW Support again. Perhaps I can steer them in the right direction with the advice you've given.

Thanks again.
