triangulum -> "Merak Mail service is not installed" (9/22/2008 6:26:19 AM)

Hi all

I don't know if this is a merak problem or a Helm 4 problem - but it started after I upgraded to Merak v9.3.2.

When I try to add a new email address in Helm, I get an error - I've run the Helm diagnostics and it tells me that "Merak Mail service is not installed".

Merak is running on the server; emails are being sent and received by all of my customers.

I have copied "api.dll" to the system32 folder and registered it - so I think that I've done eeverything I need to.

Has anyone had a similar problem?  Does anyone know how to sove this or at least how to troubleshoot further?

Chris...

Hi, Triangulum

Just an idea, try to post your question to Helm authors/forum also, they might be able to help more as they did the integration.

I see most users now moving to Plesk as it purchased Helm or using other solutions like Dot Net Panel or HC.

regards,
Marcio

Triangulum,

I saw an issue once with older Helm + Merak that was somehow related to licensing. Is your IceWarp Server expired (upgrade days)?

Marcio

Hi Marcio - thanks for responding

I have also posted this to the Helm support forums, and my Icewarp server license is active (124 days).

The helm logs show that the pop3 service isn't running;

Service MerakPOP3 was not found on computer '.'. at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.GenerateNames() at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.get_ServiceName() at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.GenerateStatus() at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.get_CanStop() at MerakMailProvider.POP3Restart() at MerakMailProvider.CreateEmailAccount(ProviderData CommandData)

but I can see that it definitely is but... there are two of them, one is running under "Administrator" and the other under "System" - that seems a little odd to me.

Gonna reboot just now and see.  Will report back.

Okay

I backed everything up, did a total uninstall and then reinstalled.  The installation app was unable to start up any of the services - but I was able to start them by clicking on "Restart all" in the "Services" section of the admin console.

I have everything operational again except I'm back to my original problem - but I'm pretty sure now that this is a Merak issue, and it started with 9.3.2.  If anyone has any info that mught help I'd really appreciate it.

You should really seek official support (or on their forums), but try to check if the registry keys for Merak are present there and pointing to the correct directory. Also, you mentioned there are two registered services with the same name, that shouldn't be possible within Windows itself. Maybe you have some kind of corrupt registry?

corinthian -> RE: "Merak Mail service is not installed" (10/4/2008 7:31:31 AM)

You should check with support on this but a couple of things come to mind...
  • Did you update api.dll on the Helm computer?
  • Was there a service left when Merak was uninstalled?
  • Have to verified there is only one instance of the Merak services in the services console?
I once performed an re-install and did not note that the uninstall process did not completely removed the service.  This created several problems during install and eventual startup.  Like Marcio stated the solution was to uninstall assure that everything was uninstalled and then re-install.

Also there was (is?) a point in the past where Helm was not supporting Merak anymore.  Something to do with the the api changing and Helm not keeping up.

Thanks for all of that GL
  • Yes, I updated API.dll
  • It looks like there might have been a service left after the uninstall [image]http://forum.icewarp.com/micons/m13.gif[/image]
  • I'm pretty sure there's only one instance running at the moment - but I previously had duplicates (one running under "Administrator" and the other under "System" - how bizarre!)

I'm going to backup/uninstall/reboot/reinstall/restore again tonight and this time I'll trawl through the registry as well and make sure all references to Icewarp/Merak are gone.

On the Helm issue - I'm using Helm 4 and it's been okay with Merak - I've had it controlling succesfully through to Merak v9.3.1 so I can't see there being any reason it would suddenly stop on v9.3.2 (I've had a look at the list of updates and can't see anything that should break).

Will give feedback in the early hours of the morning (South Africa time).

triangulum -> RE: "Merak Mail service is not installed" (10/6/2008 1:35:50 PM)

Well... it's now the early hours of the morning and I can report total success.

Firstly, in cases such as this you should backup EVERYTHING and then uninstall - once done, go through the registry and remove all Merak/Icewarp related info (backup the registry before you start).  Once done, reboot and then install Merak again and then restore your settings and folders.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to help with this.  I really appreciate it - all ideas were welcome.

Hi, Chris

Wow, great that you sorted it out and surely tip will be great for others. But still I guess you might have to look into Plesk or some other alternative as it seems they will abandon Helm support in the near future...

regards,
Marcio
